Ancient Olympia tour
Olympia is a sanctuary of ancient Greece in Elis on the Peloponnese peninsula and is known for having been the site of the Olympic Games in classical times.
Also, the Olympic flame of the modern-day Olympic Games is lit by reflection of the sunlight in a parabolic mirror in front of the Temple of Hera and then
transported by a torch to the place where the games are held.
Our trip begins from Athens to ancient Olympia through beautiful and picturesque landscapes.
On Olympia site we visit the archeological region and the museum.
Especially we visit:
• The Temple of Hera and the Temple of Zeus
• The Pelopion that was the alleged tomb of Pelops a figure in Greek mythology. This tomb became an altar for animal sacrifices in Archaic Greece.
• Nymphaeum of Herodes Atticus
• The Crypt (arched way to the stadium)
• The Echo Stoa and the Palaestra
We continue our walk to the Archaeological Museum of Olympia which was built opposite the excavation site in a valley northwest of the Kronion Hill.
The museum includes magnificent collections of bronzes, sculptures and items from the ancient Olympic Games.
There, are also displayed notable exhibits such as The Hermes bearing the infant Dionysus by Praxiteles, The Nike of Paeonius, the Zeus
carrying Ganymedes, The helmet of Miltiades, the Miniature bronze statue of a horse etc.
After this charming and multicultural experience, our guide will transfer you to excellent restaurants at the Olympia region in order to take a lunch.
